It has been 7 long years since the release of the sci-fi action film 'Edge of Tomorrow' released. Now fans are wondering what the status is for the sequel, after the film was left on a cliffhanger.

Edge of Tomorrow, otherwise known as 'Live Die Repeat' is a 2014 action film directed by Doug Liman. The film was well-received by many fans, who are waiting for a sequel. It currently sits at 7.9/10 on IMDB.

In 2015, it was expected a sequel would follow not long after when Cruise and Screenplay writer Christopher McQuarrie had been discussing ideas for Edge of Tomorrow 2. Please note: This article contains spoilers!

• No sequel has been confirmed at the time of writing and HITC believes that Edge of Tomorrow 2 will not be in the works anytime in the near future.

Every subsequent year, since the release of the first film (2014), had the production crew working toward a sequel. However, though director Doug Liman and writer Jez Butterworth had been working on a script for the film, leading actress Blunt had mentioned that it would be too much for the actors to take on and that, though they would love to reprise their roles, herself and Cruise were busy with Mary Popping and Mission Impossible respectively.

In October 2019, it was reported that the script had been completed and that the only thing everyone was waiting on, were the leading actors to sign on. Earlier this year in May 2021, Blunt tells Howard Stern in an interview that she believes the movie is "too expensive", she goes on to say that due to the position of the industry (as a result of the pandemic) that people will need to figure out what the next step is "for the kinds of film's people want to make".

Though the film production is not imminent, fans shouldn't lose hope as the only thing stopping a sequel is conflict in the schedules of the actors. Should the production company move forward with the film, we don't expect it to release until about 2024, due to Cruise shooting the next two Mission Impossible films next year and the year after.

Edge of Tomorrow 2: Plot explained

Should the film be confirmed, Edge of Tomorrow 2 will be a "sequel that's a prequel" says Liman. The first film revolved around Tom Cruise, or rather Major William Cage being put on the front lines of war as he is doomed to relive the same day over until he can save the world. The timeline is changed at the end of the film and though Cage awakens in an alternative history, it is expected that the loop is broken.

As Liman has stated that it will be a prequel, we expect that it will show the events of Emily Blunt's character Sergeant Rita Vrataski, being stuck in her time loop that she mentions in the first film and potential others that have had the same ability. The prequel title will be ' Live Die Repeat and Repeat'.

Therefore, Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise would be expected to reprise their roles, should their schedules align.
