Image
ROMULUS, MI - He has a number of new movies to check out. We caught up with "Donnie Darko" and "Independence Day" actor, James Duval, at the inaugural Motor City Legacy horror convention which took place in Romulus this weekend. Duval is a Michigan native, and while he didn't live here for very long, he does still have family here and says he enjoys visiting when he can. "I was born in Royal Oak in '72. My father was born in Pontiac and then raised in Dearborn. My aunts, my cousins, my uncles, in Harrison and Grand Rapids. Some of them moved out, but most of them on my father's side are still here," Duval told MLive. "I left when I was child, but because I have family here, of course, I kept coming back and I'm still coming back. Whenever I get back to Michigan, right away, I feel so at home. Midwestern hospitality doesn't exist anywhere else. It's very welcoming to come back to that." Duval has a new movie coming out at t...

Dating apps are creating unique new experiences to get people to meet in person - CNBC

Image
People drink outside a bar. Caitlin Ochs | Reuters A handful of twenty-somethings stand at the door of The Gin Mill, a New York City bar, trying to get past the bouncer. But instead of just producing IDs, anyone wanting to get in has to show they had a dating app on their phone. The singles event, hosted by the dating company Thursday, has become a regular occurrence across the city. The company operates its namesake app, which has all the features of a normal dating app, but with a twist: It's only available to use once a week, on Thursdays. The company unlocks the option to match at midnight every Thursday and people have until the end of the day to connect with and message other users. It creates a sense of urgency. In an effort to actually get people out of the house, Thursday hosts in-person meet-ups that same night across New York and London, where the company is based. At the end of the day, the slate is wiped clean and all of the matches and conversations disappear. And it ...

A tale of two sisters and the eleven-plus - The New Statesman

Image
Photo by Hilary Walker/Millennium Images My twin sister and I were sat on the sofa downstairs, exchanging worried looks. Even with the telly on we could hear Mum playing that one Abba song on repeat upstairs in the bedroom. The winner takes it all The loser's standing small Beside the victory That's her destiny It was results day and the news was starting to sink in. I had passed my eleven-plus. My sister had not. Anyone who grew up in an area with grammar schools will know the entrance exam is more than just a test. I was only ten, but its implications seemed enormous. It was like I was inhabiting my own personal Choose Your Own Adventure book. As a working-class  girl in Thatcher's Britain, I was raised to believe the eleven-plus held the keys to genuine social mobility.  I was a future first-generation university student on free school meals – a ...

Hollywood loves horror movie sequels for their repeat customers - Quartz

Image
Sequels are the financial lifeblood of Hollywood, launching multi-decade franchises and allowing studios to develop ancillary products and experiences. And horror movie sequels are something like an industry cheat code, often requiring much smaller budgets than other genres and, in some cases, delivering major box office returns.  Although sequels have been around since the dawn of the film business, horror sequels didn't take off until the 1970s, when the 1973 release of The Exorcist led to the release of a series of follow-up films. Similarly, the summer blockbuster Jaws in 1975, led to the release of Jaws 2 several years later, ultimately making it the most profitable horror franchise to date when adjusted for inflation.  There's been some debate as to whether Jaws is a horror film or an adventure film. A simple way to distinguish the two is to compare the ever-present terror the great white shark visits upon every resident of the fictional Amity Island...

Avengers 5's Line-Up Makes Infinity War's Hero Problem Look Laughable - Screen Rant

No matter what the line-up of  Avengers 5  turns out to be, the team will have an even more complex hero problem than  Avengers: Infinity War . Nearly three years after Avengers: Endgame , little has been revealed about the plans for the Avengers in MCU's Phase 5. Audiences are speculating about which heroes, both new and old, might be part of the team in the franchise's next installment. Nick Fury's initiative to protect Earth from alien threats has grown into one of the greatest forces in the galaxy. The Avengers evolved from a team of five people to a wide collection of the most powerful heroes from throughout the universe. Nearly every hero who has appeared in the MCU has been an Avenger, so putting together the team for Avengers 5 will not be an easy task. An unexpected pregnancy ended King's career of contract killing...

Is Jeepers Creepers: Reborn coming out in 2022? - Hidden Remote

Image
The fourth entry in the controversial Jeepers Creepers  franchise, Jeepers Creepers: Reborn , remains without a release date. Considering how the series monster awakens in the Spring, it seemed like a Spring release date would be ideal. Originally expected as a Fall 2021 release, the film was delayed since post-production lasted longer. As of this writing, Jeepers Creepers: Reborn is still slated to arrive this year, but that might not be till the Halloween season. Jeepers Creepers: Reborn will attempt to breathe new life into the series and has completely removed its creator, Victor Salva. Despite his lack of involvement, Salva's trilogy will impact the events of the fourth film. Recently, the film's official Youtube released a clip discussing capturing a certain tone for the project. While Timo Vuorensola discusses his approach to the film, storyboard art reveals The Creeper will be escaping Taggart's barn. While this new iteration is trying to distance itself ...

The Importance of the Sakuma Drops Candy in Grave of the Fireflies - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Studio Ghibli's The Grave of the Fireflies, which is based on the semi-autobiographical short story of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka, was released in 1988 and has since become a timeless classic. The film, directed by Isao Takahata, follows the tragic story of Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, who must learn to survive the harsh realities of war after their house is destroyed in a firebombing raid. From the outset of The Grave of the Fireflies , the Sakuma Drops, which Setsuko preciously carries, have such character and significance that they almost become a third protagonist within the film. While the meaning behind these sweets is never directly explained, they can be linked to the film's historical context and its themes of innocence, childhood and even death.
