One afternoon in 2020, early in the pandemic, I met Syl'violet and Matthew for a virtual session. Young, idealistic, deeply in love, they were also prone to dramatic fights. In this session Syl'violet, a vivacious essayist and spoken-word poet, was trying to describe the ways she felt Matthew, a measured medical student, was trying to control her, in this case by trying to dissuade her from buying a slushy. He thought they should keep to a tight budget until after he became a doctor and achieved financial stability. Then she could have "all the slushies you want later." Syl'violet found his reasoning maddening, especially since he seemed to imply she was reckless. On the face of it, the fight seemed insignificant, but then an exchange took place that changed the tenor of the argument, connecting u...

It's a scene that's unique with a DIY approach, and one that locals are intensely dedicated to. It's also a similar approach that Nice Guys Pizza owners Greg Gebhard and Jovana Batkovic took with their restaurant. "We like the lighting low," said Gebhard. "We like the music loud. It's kind of got dive bar feelings when you walk in. But food and beverage is so important to us that that I think, shines through above everything else." The trek took eight days and he said the highlight was when they arrived at base camp but there were low points. He said one of those low points was a "horrific day when I got kicked by a horse three or four times and ended up walking for most of the day". "I was in such pain, I did not care about defying expectations or breaking stereotypes,...
