Godzilla x Kong box office collection day 4: MonsterVerse blockbuster chews up Crew and The Goat Life, inches closer to Rs 50 cr mark - The Indian Express

Despite opening to mixed reviews from all quarters, it appears that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is on its way to smashing the box office, displaying commendable performance in India as well. After recording an impressive opening, the fifth film in the MonsterVerse franchise is set to surpass the Rs 50 crore mark in the domestic market. It was the top film in India, despite competition from local releases such as Crew, Tillu Square, and Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life).

On its first Monday in theatres, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire recorded an impressive nett collection of Rs 5.55 crore in India, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. While the English version contributed Rs 2.5 crore to the total, the Hindi version brought in Rs 1.6 crore. The film's nett domestic total now stands at Rs 44.55 crore, with a global gross of Rs 1,620 crore.

On Monday, Godzilla x Kong achieved an overall English occupancy rate of 16.59 per cent. Although morning shows began with just 10.56 per cent occupancy, the rate steadily increased throughout the day, reaching 16.18 per cent during afternoon screenings, 17.97 per cent in the evening and peaking at 21.66 per cent during night showings.

It's noteworthy that the Hollywood film's performance on its first Monday matches recent successful Indian releases like Fighter (Rs 8 crore), Shaitaan (Rs 7.25 crore), Aadujeevitham (Rs 5.25 crore), Crew (Rs 4.5 crore) and Article 370 (Rs 3.25 crore). On their first Monday in Indian theatres, Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 had earned Rs 1.35 crore and Rs 1.31 crore, respectively.

The film, which premiered worldwide on Friday (March 29) amassed an impressive $194 million globally during its opening weekend, as reported by Variety. This achievement has placed it as the third-highest-grossing American film of 2024 and the seventh-highest-grossing movie worldwide. In the USA, Godzilla x Kong currently trails behind Denis Villeneuve's epic sci-fi film Dune: Part Two ($626 million) and Mike Mitchell's martial arts comedy Kung Fu Panda 4 ($347 million).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, out of the total $194 million earned by the monster film in its opening weekend, $114 million came from overseas across 64 markets. The movie, jointly backed by Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment, also saw a noteworthy $44 million in revenue from China.

"We wanted to deliver something that was highly entertaining to audiences. Nobody has a crystal ball. You can only hope and dream. So, seeing this result globally feels really good and exciting," Godzilla x Kong producer Mary Parent told Variety.

The 38th film in the Godzilla franchise and the 13th film in the King Kong franchise, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a direct sequel to Godzilla vs Kong (2021). Going by current trends, The New Empire is likely to surpass the lifetime collection of its predecessor in no time.
