Online dating campaign delivers Romeo, the world's loneliest frog, a potential mate - SBS News

This endangered male Sehuencas water frog was the only one of its kind in captivity for more than a decade, until now.

An online dating campaign for Romeo raised enough money to fund field expeditions to search for a mate. And earlier this month, two females were found and brought back to the National History Museum of Alcide d'Orbigny in Cochabamba to meet Romeo and help save the species.

Of the two females brought back, one is too young and the other of good reproductive age has been appropriately named Juliet.

But it is not a case of love at first sight. The new females are in quarantine for vets to check there is no risk of disease, with a fungal disease reportedly threatening the species out in the wild.

However, the museum is confident the pair will hit it off. With a tentative date of Valentine's Day for the meeting.
